OUR HISTORY

On March 6, 1775, Prince Hall, a son of an English father and a free colored woman of French extraction, received the degrees of Masonry in an Army Lodge holding a Warrant from the Grand Lodge of Ireland. At the same time, several other African Americans were made Masons of this Lodge. Later, in accordance with the well established customs of that time, this Lodge gave a dispensation to these fifteen (15) African Americans to meet as a Lodge, bury the dead Masons and celebrate St. John's Day, but did not permit them at that time to initiate members.

When the original Lodge moved on, Prince Hall tried to get full power for his Lodge. He applied to both Masonic groups in Boston, the Ancient and Modern for a full Warrant but was refused. After the Revolution, he applied directly to the Grand Lodge of England for a Charter, which was granted on May 1, 1787.

Africa Lodge No. 459 was set up under the unquestionable authority of the Grand Lodge of England, with Prince Hall as Worshipful Master. An assembly of the craft in Massachusetts formed a Grand Lodge on July 24, 1791 with Prince Hall as Grand Master. According to all Masonic practices, this Grand Lodge and its members were just as legimate, just as regular as any Grand Lodge in the United States.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Texas is a descendant of the First Prince Hall Grand Lodge. The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Texas was organized August 20, 1875 by the Grand Lodge of Kansas in Brenham, Texas, with the Honorable Norris Wright Cuney serving as its first Grand Master. After its organization, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, F. and A.M. of Texas began its growth from five (5) small Lodges in 1875. Today it has approximately 150 Lodges with a total membership of approximately 4,500. Its permanent home is Fort Worth, Texas.
